little craft project for children aged 10 and up – pen holder

The birthday present is done.

Quick guide:

Materials: 3 offcuts of any glued laminated board or similar, a thick piece of branch, a thin branch, a scrap of leather or some string.

The day before the crafting, glue 3 boards together to the right size and clamp them up properly. Cut the long sides (table saw – a job for the parents), mark out the curve with a pair of compasses and then cut it (bandsaw). Drill the holes in the cheese with various Forstner bits. (cordless drill) Sand and oil (linseed oil brings the grain out nicely). Maybe sign and date the underside. The mouse is carved from a branch (hazel, for example), ears too. The tail is a strip of cowhide. The face is burnt in with a soldering iron. Dowel the mouse on – done!
