New kitchen board: “Das Große”
“Das Große” kitchen board measures 500x300x37mm and is a true all-rounder!
Besides a handle that’s suitable for big men’s hands too, “Das Große” has 2 usable sides. One side comes with a juice groove. This catches the liquid running out of a freshly cut tomato and anything else you’re cutting. The juice groove has enough capacity, even when there’s a lot of cutting going on. Thanks to its wide, flat shape it’s easy to clean.
The second side uses the full surface of the board and is perfect, for example, for rolling out or cutting out dough.
The handle means the board can be hung up without any trouble. The very high material thickness of 37mm even makes it possible to stand the board on its edges.
Thanks to their naturally beautiful wood colouring, the boards are also popular as pot stands. For large tables the boards are shaped so that they can be lined up next to each other. The handle end always fits into the foot end of the next board.
Our chopping boards are handmade. For impregnation we use cold-pressed linseed oil only. Every chopping board is oiled 3 times, with a drying time of 24h between oilings.
Something like that isn’t feasible in mass industry, as it would be far too expensive to spend 3 days on oiling. That’s why siccatives are often added, which act as drying accelerators. We also keep finding that many mass-market kitchen board manufacturers use dyes in the oil. Just compare a pure acacia wood with linseed oil and the various acacia boards you get in the “specialist shops”. Those are then evenly brown, even though acacia offers shades from yellow to brown. When those boards then get cuts from use, the boards’ true colour shows… Well, that may be fine for the mass market. But we think you only need to buy yourself a good kitchen board every 50 years, if not even less often. So just once in a lifetime.
If you then care for it once a year with linseed or sunflower oil, it only gets more beautiful – just like its user (with good care 😉 ).
“Das Große” kitchen board comes in 3 types of wood: beech, acacia and oak. The weights of the boards vary considerably with the type of wood. So does the cut resistance.
