On this outdoor staircase one step had crumbled away completely: the clinker bricks were lying loose and the mortar beneath had turned to soil. At this property in Berlin-Zehlendorf we took the step apart entirely, cleaned the old bricks of mortar and cleaned the base down to the solid core. So that the new mortar would bond to the old masonry, we prepared the contact surfaces with a bonding slurry and then rebuilt the step using the cleaned original clinker bricks. Half a day’s work – and the staircase once again has a step that matches the rest.
