In a period stairwell in Berlin-Pankow a baluster was missing from the wooden banister – with an original from the time the building went up, that’s not something you pick up at the DIY shop. We took one of the existing balusters as a pattern, took off its profile and dimensions and turned the piece on the lathe in our workshop, including the fluted collar in the middle. The photos show the gap, the workpiece on the lathe and the new baluster freshly fitted, still in bare wood. It was then painted in the original colour – now the banister is complete again, and you’d have to hunt for the replacement.
